The Scent of God’s Glory
For we are the aroma of Christ to God…
Nothing is quite so fragrant as a fresh blooming flower out in a garden. I especially love carnation roses. They seem so bright and beautiful. Something about the aroma just makes me smile. It brings me to my happy place inside. And the entrepreneurs of the ever growing aromatherapy industry bank on this feeling. You can capture these fragrances in your home with incense, candles, essential oils, wax burners, – you name it!
But did you know that we have our own fragrance? No, I’m not talking about B.O. or deodorant or perfume here. But God says as believers in Christ we have a fragrance that brings life to the world!
I know they come up with some pretty strong scents these days. Coconut dreams. Fresh linens. Apple pie delight (yum!) But the kind of fragrance to bring life and hope to a world full of worries and trouble? That comes from within. And it is far stronger than anything you can get from Yankee Candle. Here Paul is writing to give the church of Corinth hope, despite all the suffering they faces during those times. There was a lot of persecution, a lot of opposition to the word, and he faced such harsh conditions that he sometimes felt he was on the brink of death…
“But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.”dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.”
2 Corinthians 1:9-10 ESV
See, it was actually through his sufferings that his faith became strong. He knew God was using everything that was happening to him, even the bad stuff, for good. And because of that he became full of joy and confident hope, and that attitude was contagious.
When we choose to allow God to use us in our weaknesses, in our hard times, when we don’t know if we’re enough or what to do next – he makes wonderful things happen! He blesses us and renews our hearts from the inside out. He fills us with that wonderful fragrance that spreads His love to those around us.
YOU are a beautiful, fragrant flower for the Lord – and he wants the whole world to see His glory in you!
